Chennai,Triplicane is one of the famous historic
place not only for its rich history of temples and mosque’s, but there are
other manic that keeps your finger
crossed. The sea coast of marina wind
straight from Kannaki statue, one can find huge number of books on the platform
sites, where hawkers would shout saying 20 and 30once the time gets four in the
evening. The book stall owners have their own committee called “Thiruvallicani
Bharathi Sallai Palaya Putthaga Viyabarigal Sangam” which deals about their
problems relating to safeguard their rights of selling books on the street.
When
we spoke to a leader of the committee Anbumani who is 50 years old stated that,
there are 33 bookstalls under Triplicane association, we sale books related to
education, medical and general knowledge. Many of them who take up and run
bookstalls are continuing from their fathers and forefathers. When we spoke to
the other friend Pandiyan 52years old, who has been in to this business, since
from his childhood, he had an education till his 8th grade, then after he
worked at ‘Mohan Publication’ in the same street. Later, he had started his own
bookstall. He laughed saying at the time when I started the book stall, there
were only a number of eight book stalls in the street and now the number has
gone up due to the new form of education in the city. Our target audience are
not only students but the entire public, especially the rich ones try to get a
English novels from our stalls rather than in the branded shops since we often
give for less amount, fortunately this doesn’t affect us, because we have a
direct dealers and old book whole sellers in the city, I have a dealer at Tambaram
likewise every shopkeepers would have a conduct to get books for less amount. It
is an interesting buzz that keeps you wonder; here is a person named Ashok, 32
year old guy, who has only studied 6th grade. He dropped his studies when his
father Mohan died and soon after, he took up his father work and being a bread
winner of his family he feeds all six including his wife, children and mother.
He
says that only during raining season the business seems to be dull, sometimes
we close our stalls but during the month of June and July, we get a decent
amount of good income, since it is a time of re-opening of colleges and
schools. I get all these collection of books from my customers, who buy from me
and once, they complete their reading often they return to me back. So I
maintain favourable relationships and keep having related books especially for
engineering studies. Every book stalls are busy in the evening and crowded with
good number of customers though there are publication houses, which have book
shops but our business are not disturbed by their competition but as whole at
the end of the day we are 'OK' with what we get, says Ashok the young seller.
