Chennai, Triplicane Sunguwar Street, which is located near
Triplicane railway station, has lot to say about, with a mess of cows and
buffaloes along with the horse under the bridge stink. The street starts with
messy things around with canal under the bridge gives you a hostile walk, and
in the same street one can find a nearly 60 cows and buffaloes together.
Morning sound gives you a good feel of village atmosphere around, but indeed
the later evening cows and buffaloes walk equally together as men and women as
pedestrians on the street and cause heavy amount of traffic. When i spoke with
Sambath and Laxmi, who held four cows and two buffaloes in the street said
that, "We have been holding and looking after cows and buffaloes from
nearly of 60years". The Triplicane all together have 600 cows and
buffaloes. Usually Sambath distributes the milk to local tea shops and
neighbouring houses. But he disclaims that, the government doesn't support them
to hold cows and buffaloes in the city stating, since it is the only family run
business from generation after generation so we can't drop and go for some
other work. It is interesting to know that, one Cow costs 20thousand to 25, but
Buffalo costs 50thousand to one lakh, and further adding one litter cow milk
costs of 25rupees and Buffalo milk costs of 32rupees.The amount of income, what
we get is not enough, since the expenses of haystack and other items cost more
says Laxmi the wife of sambath..
